Welcome to Fairies on Friday here at Baby Gates Down!

A few years ago I had this idea about doing weekly fairy posts because my eldest was so big on them.

I never did it, but I made a button and EVERYTHING, so I was pretty thrilled about “F” being on a Friday for the April A to Z.

F is for Fawn, my daughter’s favourite of the Disney Fairies.

Back at letter B you met her other favourite dolly.

You know, that one that draws all the attention by simply being (faux) Barbie and perpetually needing medical attention.

Fawn is more low maintenance.

You will see her here, in a collage from a 2014 post:

My eldest got her for Christmas when she was three as part of a set.

It was love at first sight.

The wings and the skirt are long gone.

But Fawn, the orange fairy, remains a favourite.

Here she is today, a little worse for wear:

While she doesn’t go to school, she and Una (the “Barbie” from post B) still travel pretty much everywhere of importance that we go.

Who is Fawn, you ask?

Why does my daughter love Fawn?

I asked her while doing this post and the answer involved an affirmation, an “I don’t know” and a reference to her hair.

Granted that braid is pretty sweet. But, if you need a bit more than that, I love Fawn for her sense of adventure. If my daughter needed to pick a fairy, she could do a lot worse.

Fawn is an “animal-talent” fairy – as in, she can speak multiple “animal languages”. She’s the “tomboy” and the prankster, always ready for rough-and-tumble play. But she also has a softer side, as a caretaker to Mother Dove.

So basically, she’s a multilingual, adventurous spirit with a good sense of humour who loves animals and takes care of others.

I’m good with that.

Above, I mentioned that she is one of the Disney Fairies. That franchise was created in 2005, building around the character of Tinker Bell from Walt Disney’s 1953 animated film Peter Pan (which we actually refer to, rather sadly, around here as “the original Tinker Bell movie”).

Tinker Bell is originally from J.M. Barrie‘s 1904 play Peter Pan and 1911 novelization Peter and Wendy. In Barrie’s 1902 novel, The Little White Bird, where he introduces the mythos of Peter Pan and the fairies he wrote:

When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies.

According to Wikipedia, the Disney Fairies are based on a similar idea: every time a newborn baby laughs for the first time, that laugh travels out into the world, and those that make their way to Neverland turn into a Never fairy.

The fairies generally reside in the Home Tree located in Pixie Hollow in Neverland. In addition to Fawn and Tink, other main characters include Vidia, Iridessa, Rosetta, Silvermist and Terence.
