To quote Dracula, the most famous of the undead, I bid you good evening!
Oh – and regarding today’s title? It’s a song I (sadly) only just came across this week while researching for this post (more on that at the end). And for the record? I understand it’s about nothing more violent than a mosh pit.
But, ah! To quote Chaucer’s character in the otherwise rather forgettable “A Knight’s Tale”, I give the truth scope! And so I will fit it with this week’s theme in Jen Kehl’s ever fabulous Twisted Mix Tape Blog Hop.
The theme? Ah yes! As follows:
Songs that are scary. FOR ANY REASON. Halloween is a few days away. Are they scary because of the words, what the band looks like, because it’s just so darn bad??
Please visit the others on scary song hop here:
I thought I’d use this week’s theme to have a bit of festive fun with one of my favourite genres of fiction.
See, I have a little 15 + year obsession with vampire mythology. I have a whole library of both vampire books and movies. Some good. And others not so much….
So what I’m going to give you tonight? Five – in my opinion – REALLY good – vampire related songs or mixes. Then for a few kicks at the end – two bonuses for fun.
Happy Halloween! Here goes…
First: A Tribute featuring the theme and selections from Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 Bram Stoker’s Dracula. [2017 update: original video went offline – closest replacement – but no longer a musical tribute]
The soundtrack for this movie was great. The music here is appropriately eerie. The movie was, for me, my first real venture into the genre. And I have this vivid recollection of Oprah talking about how she left the theatre disgusted with the movie – which at 15, just made me all the more a fan [Full disclosure: I now read Oprah Magazine and think it is quite wonderful].
But at 15? I quickly read Bram Stoker’s 1897 book – and started researching the vampire myth. I was hooked.
And I have to say, for those uninitiated to the whole vampire obsession that has gripped modern culture (there must be some of you out there – though I’ve seen librarian jokes to the effect of the YA section being renamed the “Vampire Fiction” section – so I suspect you may be few and far between) this four-minute video gives a pretty good run down of the Dracula myth as viewed in modern-day thanks much to Stoker.
That said, before going further, I need to give an obligatory shout out to John Polidori, Lord Bryon’s personal physician, who was present that infamous June night in 1816 where he, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Goodwin (his fiancée), Claire Clairmont and Lord Byron decided, after reading aloud from Tales of the Dead, to each compose a horror story. From this night came, in addition to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Polidori’s 1819 The Vampyre, which was the first vampire story to show the vampire as an aristocratic gentleman.
And now that you have the basics: garlic; sunlight; crosses; stake through the heart; and hot sex [I mean, eternal and thus problematic undying love] with the undead… let’s have some fun, shall we?
Anne Rice hit big shortly after I became aware of vampires.
And in 1994 out came Interview With the Vampire: The Movie.
This movie cemented the love. Because A) Great story and B) To (sort of) quote 1994’s Airheads, you get Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, Antonio Banderas, and Kirsten Dunst together and they could basically fart on snare drums for two hours and I’d watch it. Stellar cast + great story = awesome movie.
So I give you two selections from that movie.
The first is Lestat’s Tarentella because, I have the soundtrack, and, to this day, this is the song I remember. It’s a memorable scene (There is Life in the Old Lady Yet!); and the song adds to it:
Then, of course, there is Guns ‘N Roses Sympathy for the Devil, which closes out the movie. Fabulous for the genre and also fabulous in that it’s a swan song for the end of the original members of that band. I give you here a fan’s memorial and contribution, honouring both:
Choice four goes to a song from 2002’s Queen of the Damned. A “loose” translation of the Anne Rice novels, it combines the second and third from the vampire series: The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. That said, as far as putting on-screen the image I visualize on the page as far as the rock concert goes? It’s pretty fabulous. For those uninitiated, the back story is that a vampire decides to head a rock band because he’s tired of (un)living life in the shadows and wants to scream what he is from the rooftops. Of course no humans actually believe him. But the undead ain’t thrilled. Here’s the concert:
Just for the record, the song for most of the above clip is Slept So Long by Jay Gordon.
And here we are at my final choice. I give you a Buffy fan video compiled to David Usher‘s 2001 Black, Black Heart. The song fits; and the video certainly fits for my favourite vampire pick: Spike, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
It is what it is. And here it is:
Honestly? I started watching Buffy as a joke. But it resonated for me at that stage of life on so many levels. And Spike was just, well, the perfect bad guy, then the perfect reformed bad guy. And the whole bad to good transformation was buyable within the plot, so I was invested in wanting him to want to be better. For her. Swoon. And thanks, plot line, for leaving that unresolved.
Right! We’re done. With the list of five, I mean. But I promised bonuses. So here they are. I have two. First is this fabulous Top Ten Vampires compilation I found to my now post namesake by Drowning Pool:
Spoiler alert if you haven’t watched the above video … Her number two choice is the only vampire who has ever made me hungry for the wolf.
Which brings me to my second bonus video: Buffy vs. Edward. This one isn’t to music, but is a mash-up done a few years back that puts clips from Buffy together with Twilight. It’s brilliant and pretty well sums up my thoughts on Bella and the messages of Twilight. Which, in case the video is unclear, or you don’t watch it: Edward is a controlling creep. So in this one instance, choose the wolf.
Thanks for listening! Happy Halloween!
One might say you have a minor obsession with vampires! lol I, too, read Dracula, and the rest of the monster classics when I was very young (probably the 11-12 range). This led to many sleepless nights, as well as shadow avoiding for many years. I’ve recently grown bored of the basics though, as True Blood has run its route and the Twilight series kind of made a mockery of the genre. Still, you’ve provided some good stuff here. Nice job!

Wow! 12 is really quite young for all that! As for vampires of recent years, I tend to agree – I watched True Blood for a bit and enjoyed their take. My current guilty pleasure is the Vampire Diaries – I think they actually manage to be one of those rare shows that are better than the book (if you like high school dramas at any rate). As for Twilight – words really aren’t enough to express how much I dislike that series.
Thanks so much for the visit!

Vamp series are one of my guilty reading pleasures. My husband finally got tired of building bookshelves and bought me a Kindle because they were taking up so much room in the house. Fantastic job on the list!

I’ve been thinking I have to figure out e-readers soon. Have to admit I’ve stopped reading Vampire fiction in recent years so I’m not too familiar with new stuff out there. A few years back I devoured the Sookie Stackhouse stuff – and that was fun. But other than that, and a few randoms from the library (that are totally forgettable) I haven’t come across anything too compelling recently.
So I’m open to book suggestions….
And thanks for the kind words! It was fun to have a reason to talk about vampires 🙂

Did you know that axl replaced slash’s guitar with two other guitarists on that song? That’s just evil, isn’t it? It was also the last thing slash did with the band.
Good list, I loved it.
Happy Halloween

Ugh on the Axl point – didn’t know that – though knew it was the last bit they did together. There was a band with …. drama. I even read one of the “unauthorized bios” on them a few years back – fun read.
Glad you liked the list! It was a fun theme to play with this week 🙂

Glad you liked it! It felt a bit silly in places – but, then, that’s part of Halloween fun 😉

I enjoy the old school vamps (Like Le Stat for example). I’m not into sparkling vamps with creepy stalkerish habits. I refuse to let my 13 yr old daughter read Twilight bc its not okay for a 100 yr old + Man to be watching a teenage girl sleep!
As for your list, these are great songs!

I don’t know that I can fully express everything I dislike about the messages in Twilight. Aside from the awful message that the whole stalker/passive female who just takes it gives to girls; I remember one synopsis that I read to the effect of: Let me get this straight – completely average, non communicative, non athletic, not very bright, clumsy, doesn’t contribute anything to the equation, and not very engaging girl comes into town, makes zero effort, and all the hot guys just fall over each other fighting for her attention? Now that’s a fairy tale!
So many times ugh for that entire series.
But yay for Lestat! And so glad you liked the mix.

LOVE! So I read all the Anne Rice novels as they came out. I was so hooked I continued to read everything she ever wrote. This also began my love affair with New Orleans, where I still have never been. I have read the history of the myth of the vampire in many places, but to my understanding it always heads back to the barber who was also the doctor in many towns with the only actual remedy being bloodletting, lets be thankful that is no longer the case!
This is a great use of the topic! Thank you!

I didn’t know the barber/dr. bit – I’m so going to look that up…
As for Anne Rice – I found by the end she was a bit less wonderful – but overall I love her. I also haven’t read her newer stuff. But I still follow her on Facebook 🙂
I have never been to New Orleans either and have a similar love affair due to Anne Rice. And Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – that movie helped too 😉

Both of you get to NOLA now! Love that city!

Love this post. I too have a vampire obsession. I’ve read some really shitting lit in that vein. Let’s just say Twilight is a masterpiece compared to some. But it’s my guilty pleasure. Oddly enough, I’m just starting The Vampire Lestat this week. I read Interview and then some how hit snooze on Anne Rice for all these years! I guess I finally figured that if I were going to read about vamps, it may as well be well-written from time to time.
Re. Queen of the Damned- I thought that movie blew. But Townsend was super hot and the soundtrack was killer, so that made up for the rest of it.
Re. Buffy- I was totes in love with Spike
And definitely Team Jacob, duh.

Yay Spike and Team Jacob! Hope you love The Vampire Lestat. That one and Queen of the Damned were my favourites from her!

Yeah – I’m forever iffy on young Mr. Harker’s performance. I think Keanu is kinda like Will Smith – he plays himself pretty well, but that’s about it. But that aside, I think the movie yes, is scary in all the right ways. Thanks for the vampire love!

In the lead up to tomorrow when we start Vampire A to Z week here on the blog, I thought I’d re-blog this vampire music post from last year to help get the party started!
Life needs a soundtrack – so here’s my suggestion for vampire week here at Baby Gates Down!

Louise! I’ve missed you THIS MUCH!!! Then I come over to this post about one of my favorite things EVAH! Love this! Gawd, even I think RobPat is a hot vamp, but yeah, the Edward character is…meh. I have a refrigerator magnet (yes, I’m that nerdy) that says, “Team Edward. Unless Jacob is shirtless.” hahahaha
great vids at the end. Out of all those vampires, I think Brad Pitt may be my favorite, even though I hate to say it for some reason. He is an amazingly sexy vampire! And Interviews and Bram Stoker’s Dracula? Two of my favorite all time movies, no shit! “I’ve crossed oceans of time to find you.” <<< HOT quote by D.S. Dracula. *swoon
You know, I never read either of the books, but I should. They're amazing, Yes? Should I?
I love that we both LURVE vampires and hockey!!!! You're awesome, L. 🙂

oops, I meant hot quote by B.S. Dracula, which are unfortunate initials come to think of it. haha
Also? Kudos on a Halloween banner.

Yay! I love that you love vampires too. I stopped following it all for a bit after Twilight let me down, but I think I might revisit for the next little while…
As for Dracula and Anne Rice – yes, they are amazing and yes read!
And 1992 Dracula – maybe because it was the first one I saw, but agreed – notwithstanding Keanu’s fading accent throughout, I think it’s an amazing movie – and Oldman is amazing as Dracula 🙂
As for the banner – thx! I had a bit of fun – still learning but it works. My photographer hbby was even (sort of) impressed (before going on about how we should get better photo editing software for home…)
Missed you too – life’s been, well, life.

Oldman was brilliant, but not on the list…and he was pretty hot as Dracula. Not Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise hot….but hot nonetheless. I mean, they all are, amirite? #vampsaresexy

Ah – if we are just focussing on the video list – I agree with the top pick. Stuart Townsend all the way.

OMG, I didn’t even know about him, and he’s seriously lick-me material. He played Lestat in Queen of the Damned? I’ve never seen that, but I’ll watch it twice to see more of him. yummmmm
BTW, I love that song (let the bodies hit the floor)

I’d recommend just buying it 😉 The soundtrack – with him “singing” as the rock star vampire – is also pretty solid.
As for Let the Bodies Hit the Floor – I only found it last year when I was doing this post – it’s pretty perfect, isn’t it?

Yes, it is a perfect theme song for this post! And I know it, but I don’t remember why. It must have been popular back in the day. Whenever that was.
You think the movie is on Netflix? Imma check. I’m in the mood for some vampire action. I have you to blame/thank. 🙂

I don’t think you can get it up here north of 60. You can Dark Shadows on Netflix here though – which I’d missed until I started catching up on my gone to ground vampire obsession. If you love Tim Burton that should work, but if you’re looking for hot vamps and Queen of the Damned is also missing from American Netflix, then I might suggest Vampire Diaries and the Salvatore Brothers. IMO it’s very palatable vampire teen fiction…

I love you “obsession” with vampires! Even though they want to snack on us, there’s something alluring about having one fancy you, too! I’m kind of the same way, though I haven’t dedicated any posts to them, as they are fascinating beings. I loved the final video as I’m a huge Buffy fan. Yes, I also agree with your thoughts on Edward Cullen and the choice, in this instance, of the wolf over this vampire. 😛
